Offline Editing
Lovebug Films was entrusted with the comprehensive offline and online editing for a high-profile Christmas campaign for Samsung, collaborating closely with the director Toby Morris, and CHEP Agency. Lovebug Films was pivotal in bringing the festive vision to life through meticulous post-production. The core of the task was first building a great offline edit. We were able to collaborate over low-latency streamed edit sessions, to get the narrative and feel of the edit down.
Online Editing
As we moved into the online phase of post-production, the focus was now on sophisticated screen replacements across all Samsung devices. This included phones, tablets, and watches. Much of this was achieved without the use of tracking markers, as the plates were shot with white or black screens to preserve texture and light within the scene. For an in-depth look at why shooting without markers can be preferred, have a read of the screen replacement post.

Advanced motion tracking (primarily in Mocha Pro) and compositing (Nuke) were used for seamless integration of creative animated elements. Such as the children's dinosaur illustration, and appropriate UI provided by Samsung. This ensured every screen looked flawless and dynamic. The UI's designs were animated within both Nuke and After Effects to bring them to life.

For the tablet shot, lens distortion was corrected, and the shot was stabilised with all compositing work being completed on the static plate. Nuke's node-based scripting was essential in achieving this procedural workflow.
3D camera tracking was also used to bring the motion-designed notifications into the edit, which ultimately served to weave the narrative of the spot together.

Advanced Compositing Techniques
A key challenge included complex split-take compositing for the final hero moment. This involved expertly rotoscoping out the hand and phone from one take and compositing the family hero shot within the phone's screen. This was all meticulously blended within Nuke over a plate with the Samsung UI motion tracked in over the top. The final shot featured various glows, glass distortion, and edge refinement to help sell the shot. Additionally, some paint work was achieved using Silhouette and Nuke, ensuring a polished final product, free of any distractions.

Why a post-production service is so vital
Through close collaboration with CHEP, Lovebug Films' technical precision was a key factor in the campaign's delivery, allowing us to complete a visually stunning campaign, with multiple final edits and repurposing for social media. Speed through workflow was a key factor, allowing the picture editing process to be handled with one vendor.
